Symptoms of Diabetes

Mainly there are three types which are type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Symptoms of diabetes are quite common and that is very dangerous as people won’t associate the symptoms with diabetes. It is good for people to know the symptoms of diabetes as if diabetes is really the threat, quick treatment can be administered to avoid it becoming severe. We will look at the symptoms of diabetes according to their types.

Diabetes Type 1 is a condition where the pancreas is unable or produces very little insulin which is used to help move glucose into cells, or can be called feeding the cells. Sometimes this is caused by the person’s immune system which attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. This type of diabetes is also quite prevalent in adults as well as children. Some of the symptoms of diabetes type 1 are weight lost, frequent urination, abnormal thirst and fatigue. A person who loses weight in spite of the big appetite is because the body is resorting to self-cannibalism or breaking down the muscles and fat stored to provide energy to glucose-deprived cells. Glucose is no more able to be transported to the cells so body resorts to the fat as energy source.

Diabetes type 1 also causes a person to be thirsty most of the time as much water is needed to lower the sugar level in the blood. Furthermore, that person also needs to urinate frequently as extra glucose has to be transported out of the body. Fatigue also happens because the person can’t have a proper energy source as glucose is not supplied to the cells. These symptoms of diabetes may look normal but if your children have them, it’s advisable to go for check-ups.

Diabetes type 2 is where insulin is produced but the cells are resistant to them. Diabetes type 2 is the most common type of diabetes caused by unhealthy lifestyle, diet and genetic predisposition. Mostly, it affects people of 35 years and above of age. 95% of diabetes cases are actually type 2. All of the symptoms of diabetes type 1 actually occur here and there are also some other symptoms, such as slow healing injuries/infections and also blurred visions. Diabetes type 2 discounted the ability to heal and fight diseases. Blurred eyesight is caused by high glucose level and fluids from the whole body including the lenses which then affect the ability to focus. One obvious symptom is that people who have diabetes type 2 might also have patches of dark skin in the creases of the body, especially the neck and armpits.

Then, what are the symptoms of gestational diabetes? Apart from symptoms mentioned above, pregnant ladies may also have vaginal infections as their immune system is weakened during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes only affects non-diabetic ladies during pregnancy. They can also be diagnosed through glucose tolerance test.

So now you know the symptoms of the different types of diabetes. If you have any of the symptoms above, make sure you go for medical check-ups.
